What the room usually costs

A good way to think about guesthouse pricing is in ranges, not one fixed number. Current market examples from a registered Maldives travel agency show local-island guesthouse room rates around US$60 to US$160 per night, with examples such as Thoddoo at US$60–135, Maafushi at US$65–150, and Ukulhas at US$70–160 per night. Those are useful as indicative ranges, not guaranteed rates, because season and room type can change the final price.

So in practical terms, a guesthouse holiday is often built around a room that feels manageable by Maldives standards, but the room is only the first part of the budget.

Taxes matter more than many travelers expect

This is where many budgets go wrong. For tourism services in the Maldives, TGST is 17% from 1 July 2025 onward. On top of that, Green Tax also applies. For smaller hotels and tourist guesthouses on inhabited islands with fewer than 50 rooms, the Green Tax is US$6 per person per day. Larger tourist properties and many resort-style establishments are charged at a higher rate.

That means a guesthouse trip is still much easier on the budget than a resort trip, but the final price is never just the room rate.

Transfers can change the whole total

The next big cost is transport after landing. Guesthouse holidays usually work best on islands with simple sea transfers, because extra domestic legs can quickly reduce the savings. Local-island travel is often built around speedboats, ferries, and island-hopping rather than resort-style private transfers, which is one of the reasons it can feel more affordable.

This is why two guesthouses with similar room prices can still end up feeling very different in value. The cheaper room is not always the cheaper trip if the island is harder to reach.

Food can stay reasonable, or creep up quietly

Many guesthouse stays include breakfast, which helps. After that, the budget depends on how you eat. A simple local-island trip can stay fairly controlled if you keep meals casual and do not turn every day into a paid outing. But excursions, boat trips, and full-day activities can quickly become the second budget if you are not watching them. Guesthouse holidays still give access to snorkeling, diving, watersports, sandbank trips, and nearby-island excursions, so the cheaper stay does not mean a less interesting trip.

That does not mean every trip will cost that amount, but it is a useful reminder that even a budget-friendly Maldives holiday usually sits in the range of room + transfer + food + tax + a few experiences, not room-only math.

In other words, a guesthouse holiday is usually affordable by Maldives standards, but “affordable” still means planning the full structure of the trip, not just chasing the cheapest nightly rate.
