This is also the best option if you want whale sharks as part of a broader snorkeling or diving holiday rather than a single one-off excursion. Official material also points to islands around Dhigurah, Dhangethi, and Maamigili as strong bases for whale shark trips in this zone.

Fuvahmulah

Fuvahmulah is one of the most distinctive alternatives. Official whale shark pages for the island say sightings happen year-round, with many of the sharks here being large females, which gives the destination a different character from South Ari.

This is usually a better fit for divers and marine-life travelers who want a more specialized trip rather than the most obvious first-time whale shark route. Fuvahmulah is also better known for broader pelagic encounters, so whale sharks here are part of a much more ocean-focused experience.

Baa Atoll

Baa Atoll is better known for manta rays, but it also belongs on the list for whale sharks. Official whale shark mapping for the Maldives places Baa as a seasonal area, with an aggregation period from roughly May/June to October/November linked to plankton feeding.

So Baa makes the most sense if you are already interested in a plankton-rich marine-life season rather than building a trip only around year-round whale shark reliability.

That makes it more of a bonus possibility for shorter trips rather than the strongest answer if whale sharks are your main priority.

If whale sharks are the main goal, choose South Ari Atoll first. If you want a more unusual, pelagic-heavy dive trip, look at Fuvahmulah. If you are traveling in the mid-year plankton season and want a broader marine-life trip, Baa Atoll becomes more relevant.

A useful general rule is that whale sharks in the Maldives tend to shift seasonally across the western and eastern sides of the archipelago, but South Ari remains the most dependable year-round answer.
