The room is only the starting point

The biggest cost difference usually comes from the stay style. A local-island guesthouse and a private-island resort can deliver very different Maldives trips, and the price gap often reflects privacy, service, and how much is packaged into the stay. A cheaper room does not always mean a cheaper trip, but the accommodation style is usually the first big fork in the budget.

Transfers change the total more than people expect

This is where many Maldives budgets go wrong. Nearby islands are often reached by speedboat, while farther islands may need a seaplane or domestic flight. That means two stays with similar room rates can end up with very different final totals once onward travel is added. For shorter trips, the transfer can have an even bigger effect because it takes up more of the overall budget and time.

Meal plans can move the budget a lot

A Maldives stay becomes much more expensive when you add lunches, dinners, drinks, and snacks one by one at resort prices. That is why meal plan choice matters so much. Full board can make sense if you mainly want meals covered. All-inclusive can make more sense if you expect regular drinks and resort dining throughout the day. The right answer depends less on the label and more on how you actually eat and drink on holiday.

Taxes are real and should be built in from the start

A lot of travelers still underestimate the tax side. 16% TGST applies to tourist goods and services, and Green Tax is charged by day stayed. MIRA also notes that Green Tax is calculated by the tourist’s stay duration, using 24-hour blocks. So even a shorter trip can feel more expensive than expected when taxes are added at the end.

Excursions and extras can quietly become the second budget

A Maldives trip can stay fairly controlled until you start adding private dining, spa treatments, diving, snorkeling trips, sandbank experiences, or premium transfers. That is why the real cost is not just “room plus flight.” It is usually “room plus transfer plus meals plus taxes plus experiences.” The more activity-led the trip is, the more important this becomes.

Entry costs are not the problem

The good news is that the entry side is relatively simple. Tourist visa is granted on arrival with no pre-approval for tourists, and the Traveller Declaration must be submitted within 96 hours before arrival. The form is free. So when budgeting, the real pressure is usually accommodation, transfer, and resort spending, not arrival paperwork.
